Through trees we trace the transition from oral to written history and the origin of Indian literature — the politics of who held the pen, and the impact of their words today. Along the walk we stop and sample fragrances from flowers & leaves.

About the event

This curated route introduces the trees that have played a role in shaping Indian scripts. Trees like Palmyra Palm, Himalayan Birch, and more have given us paper and shaped alphabets of our most commonly used written languages of today. This walk looks at the botanicals that helped move our storytelling from one that we consumed through our ears to one that we now consume through eyes. Through these trees we wrote literature, shaped society, and multiplied this thing called taxes.

These walks are one of many designed to erase tree blindness and introduce Mumbai's tree diversity.

Maharashtra Nature Park is an example of Mumbai's ability to recognise and preserve its green spaces. This lush green forest garden is embedded between Bandra and Dharavi — featuring a full canopy cover on the trail making it one of the coolest spots in the city. The garden has been converted from a dumping ground into a biodiversity hotspot for Mumbai. Several native trees occupy this space and hold space for multiple species here.
